Project story · restoring stairs after carpet coverings
Wooden stair repair and painting: before and after
Two staircases, 33 steps and carpet stair mats that would not come off. The owner had started removing the coverings, but most were firmly attached with different adhesives. We removed the remaining mats, cleaned the treads, repaired the damage and repainted both staircases.

Removing carpet, glue and staples
We heated the adhesive and carefully cut through it to lift the pads. Even after removing the carpet, fibres and glue remained on the treads. We used mechanical removal, heat and suitable chemicals to clear the adhesive, then pulled out the remaining staples.
Different surfaces needed different preparation
The risers were made from MDF with a decorative film. Parts of this film pulled away with the carpet, so the risers needed additional preparation. They could not be treated in exactly the same way as solid wood.
Repairing damaged wooden tread edges
A dog had chewed some tread edges. We rebuilt them in stages with a two-component filler, then sanded and shaped the edges. We also repaired dents and chips elsewhere on the stairs.

Sanding and repainting in the chosen colour
We prepared several colour visualisations and the owner selected the final scheme. After sanding the old surface finish and repairing the damage, we painted both staircases.
Time and labour cost for both staircases
The complete job took eight days. In July 2026, labour for the two staircases was €3,800, averaging €1,900 per staircase on this project. This average is not a standard price for every staircase. Materials are charged separately, and each project is assessed individually.
